Lives and works in Groningen, The Netherlands
Charles Badoue is a contemporary painter and draftsman currently based in Groningen, Netherlands. His artistic endeavours are a celebration of his homeland's rich cultural history, navigating through its tumultuous past and envisioning a bright future through the lens of contemporary imagery. Inspired by the dichotomy of 'home' and the instability of migration, Badoue explores themes of self-discovery, renewal, and the delicate balance between pain and joy.
His paintings showcase a fusion of abstract and figurative techniques, employing vigorous and textured brushwork with impasto strokes that create a dynamic, emotive surface. The juxtaposition of vibrant colours against dark themes serves as an homage to the dynamism of his subjects. Badoue's preferred mediums include oil paint, oil stick, and charcoal, often experimenting with the incorporation of photography and textiles. Notably, his collection predominantly features found materials, a deliberate choice to enhance the artwork message. These unrefined elements contribute unique character, incorporating colour, weight, and texture, providing additional layers of depth to both the image and its underlying meaning. Through his art, Charles Badoue invites viewers to challenge preconceptions about tradition and modernity while contemplating the intricate narratives woven into each piece.
